Built in the late 18th century by the king of Baroda together with the Sankata Ghat below it, and held to be the only temple in India dedicated solely to Sankata Devi, the ten-armed Matrika whose name means danger. The ghat was rebuilt in stone in 1825 by the widow of a Brahmin pandit, and the goddess is honoured on the eighth day of Navratri.
The Pandavas are said to have worshipped Sankata Devi here during their exile.
