An Early Anuradhapura-period stupa in Trincomalee District built by King Kavantissa, and the only site known to enshrine the Buddha's forehead bone relic along with hair relics. It counts as the ninth of the Solosmasthana, the sixteen holiest Buddhist pilgrimage places in Sri Lanka, and its four carved guardstones are unmatched at any other Sri Lankan stupa.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
The Dhatuvamsa relates that the Buddha came to this spot with five hundred arahants on his third visit to the island, and that Kavantissa enshrined the forehead relic here in fulfilment of an old prophecy.
