The goddess was carried from Calangute to Nanoda in the 17th century to escape the forced conversions of Portuguese Goa; the present temple was finished in 1905 and rebuilt in marble in the 1990s. She is the patron deity of ninety-six Kulee families of Marathas, Kalavants, Bhandaris and Rajapur Saraswat Brahmins.
When Shiva and Vishnu fought, Brahma is said to have appealed to Parvati, who came between them as Shantadurga with Vishnu at her right hand and Shiva at her left, and is shown holding two serpents for the two gods.
