Built in 1933 by Maharaja Kameshwar Singh of Darbhanga on the cremation site of his father Maharaja Rameshwar Singh, this Kali temple is among the most visited shrines in Mithila.

The dark form worshipped here is explained by the Ramayana episode in which the goddess turned black with fury after Rama slew Sahastraanan, and grew calm and abashed only when her foot came to rest on Shiva's chest.
