Solapur's central temple, built in an island setting within a lake by the yogi Siddharameshwar, a 12th-century Shiva devotee revered as a god in the Lingayat faith, who took samadhi here in 1167 CE and installed sixty-eight lingams in the courtyard. A marble samadhi marks the spot, and the temple and lake have been managed by the Shri Siddheshwar Devsthan Panch Committee since 1899.

Solapur is said to have begun prospering from the moment Siddheshwar was born.
