History & significance

A Theravada temple begun in 1920 by the Singapore Sinhala Buddhist Association; Sir Franklin Gimson laid the foundation stone of the present building in 1949 and it opened in 1952. It holds a brass Buddha given by Jawaharlal Nehru and a Bodhi tree descended, by way of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, from the tree at Bodh Gaya.
