History & significance

Founded in 1879 by the Tamil migrant Vaithi Padayatchi, this Silom temple is the oldest and most important Hindu shrine in Thailand, serving the Tamil community that settled in Bangkok as gem traders and cattle keepers from the late 1850s onward. A six-metre gopura carved with deity figures fronts the complex, and a gilded copper dome covers the main sanctum, with subsidiary shrines to Ganesha, Murugan, Shiva, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Kali, Saraswati and Nataraja.
