Built in Saka 1685 (about 1763) by Baheri Gopala Rao of the Wanaparthy Samsthanam as a deliberate copy of the Ranganatha temple at Srirangam, which earned it the name Uttara Srirangapuram, the Srirangam of the north. A tank called Ranga Samudram was dug alongside it, and mukha mandapas were added later by Sankaramba, wife of a succeeding ruler.
