History & significance

The Shiva temple that gives Thanesar its name, an ancient Kurukshetra pilgrimage site whose present structure was built by Raghunath Rao Peshwa. A gurdwara beside it marks a visit by the ninth Sikh Guru, Tegh Bahadur.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

The Pandavas and Krishna are said to have worshipped Shiva here and received his blessing for victory in the Mahabharata war.
