A hillside archaeological site near Goalpara where Hindu, Buddhist and Jain remains lie together, including hundreds of rock-cut Shiva lingas, about 25 rock-cut stupas of the early centuries CE and temple foundations excavated between 1992 and 2001. Some scholars have proposed it, rather than Guwahati, as the ancient capital Pragjyotishpura.
Local tradition says the sage Vyasa carved 99,999 lingas here in an attempt to raise a second Kashi.
