A Theravada pagoda near Monywa begun on 20 June 1939 by the Venerable Mohnyin Thambuddhei Sayadaw, paid for by local devotees and finished on 2 March 1952 on the site of a vanished 14th-century monastery. Its builder took the terraced form of Borobudur as his model, and the complex holds more than 580,000 Buddha images; during the Second World War its grounds sheltered thousands of refugees.
