A Kali temple on Bidhan Sarani older than the city of Kolkata itself, founded in 1703 by the tantrik Uday Narayan Brahmachari and re-established in 1806 by the businessman Shankar Ghosh, whose descendants remain its custodians. The 1806 rebuilding added the ath-chala Pushpeswar Shiv Mandir.
The name Thanthania is said to come from the than-than sound of the temple bells that travellers once heard through the surrounding forest.
