Regarded as the first stupa raised in Sri Lanka after the island's conversion to Buddhism, built by King Devanampiya Tissa at the request of the missionary Mahinda to enshrine the Buddha's right collar-bone. The dome standing today is the product of an 1842 rebuilding, ringed by the stone pillars of its former vatadage.
