History & significance

One of the 51 Shakti Peethas, built in 1501 by Dhanya Manikya — among the oldest structurally intact temples of Northeast India. The sanctum mound's tortoise shape gives it the name Kurma Peetha; the small Chhoto-Ma image accompanied Tripura's kings to battle. Diwali here draws lakhs to the Kalyan Sagar tank of giant turtles.

Sthala katha — the legend

The king dreamt the Goddess commanded her seat be moved to this hillock, then occupied by a Vishnu shrine — the Devi insisting deity boundaries yield to her will; here, in Peetha reckoning, fell the right foot of Sati.

Reaching there

The temple stands at Matabari, about 60 km by road from Agartala town and roughly 70 km from Agartala airport. The nearest railhead is Matabari station, some 2 km away.
