History & significance

Founded in 1815 by Suriti Appaiah, a doli bearer posted with a military battalion moved from Secunderabad to Ujjain, who vowed a shrine if a cholera outbreak ended; he installed a wooden image on his return in 1814 and the temple grew around it. It is the focus of the Bonalu festival in the twin cities.
