A Vaishnava temple at Thiruvilwamala in Thrissur district counted among the Abhimana Kshetrams, rebuilt in 1883 by the King of Kochi after fires in 1827 and 1861 and now run by the Cochin Devaswom Board. It holds what is described as the only swayambhu image of Rama in Kerala and a rare separate idol of Lakshmana.
The sage Amalaka is said to have done penance here, the shrine being founded to release the ghosts of Kshatriyas slain by Parasurama, and the hill's name is traced to a golden vilwa tree believed to stand in a cave beneath it.
