The chief Theravada monastery of Lamphun, whose stupa is traced to about 897 in the Hariphunchai kingdom and whose present compound was founded by King Athitayarat in 1044. King Tilokaraja of Lanna rebuilt much of it in 1443 and the monk Khru Ba Sriwichai led further restoration in the 1930s; the 46-metre Chedi Suwanna, a fifteenth-century Buddha image, a nineteenth-century library and a bronze gong of 1860 stand within the walls.
A stone in the south-western corner of the compound bears four footprint impressions that worshippers take as proof of a visit by the Buddha.
