The original temple here had fallen into disrepair by the end of the twentieth century, and the Chiang Rai national artist Chalermchai Kositpipat rebuilt it entirely at his own expense as an offering to the Buddha, opening it to visitors in 1997 and funding it with more than 40 million baht of his own money. Its all-white, mirror-inlaid buildings are laid out as a walk-through allegory, with a bridge over a pit of reaching hands standing for the passage beyond desire; work is projected to continue until about 2070, and an engineering survey confirmed the structure sound after a 2014 earthquake.
