A whitewashed stupa at the northern end of the Lumbini Master Plan axis, designed and built by Japanese Buddhists at a cost of roughly a million US dollars and also known as the Nipponzan peace pagoda. Four large gilded Buddha figures face the cardinal directions, and the grave of the Japanese monk Unataka Navatame lies at its base; the wetland north of it shelters the endangered sarus crane.
