A goddess temple in Bagalkot district first raised under the Badami Chalukyas, with epigraphic evidence pointing to about 603 CE in the reign of Jagadekamalla I, whose house took the goddess as its tutelary deity. After the old Dravidian structure decayed, the Maratha chieftain Parusharam Agale rebuilt it in Vijayanagara style in 1750.
The Skanda and Padma Puranas tell of the goddess Shakambhari rising from the sacrificial fire to kill the demon Durgamasura, and of her feeding the country with vegetables during a famine, which gave her that name.
