History & significance

A Goud Saraswat Brahmin temple about 30 km from Panaji, patronised by Baji Rao I in 1738 and serving as the family deity shrine for many Saraswat households.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

Shantadurga is said to have stepped between Shiva and Vishnu in a destructive quarrel, holding one on each hand until peace was restored.
