Temples of Maitreya standing on the hill above the ruins of old Basgo, established in 1680 under the Namgyal rulers on a site that already carried a fifteenth-century palace. Basgo was an early political and cultural centre of Ladakh and figures repeatedly in the Ladakhi Chronicles; its Buddha images and murals are its best-known feature.
