One of the larger and better-known Ashtavinayaka shrines, about 25 km from Pune near the confluence of the Bhima and Mula-Mutha. It was a major Ganapatya centre that drew royal patronage under the Peshwa Madhavrao I.

Ganesha is said to have recovered the wish-granting Chintamani jewel from the greedy king Gana for the sage Kapila and then stayed on at Theur.
