The oldest and largest monastery of the Nubra valley, founded in the 14th century and long the religious centre for its villages. Around a hundred monks live there and the gompa also runs a school for local Tibetan children.
A Mongol demon hostile to Buddhism is said to have been killed here yet kept returning, and his shrivelled head and hand are believed to lie inside one of the temples.
