One of the oldest Rama temples in South India, at Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu district, counted among the 108 Abhimana Kshetrams of Vaishnavism and endowed by the Chola king Parantaka I. Ramanuja is held to have received his Pancha Samskaram here beneath the temple's magizha tree.
The temple's name is traced to 1798, when the British Collector Lionel Blaze is said to have seen Rama and Lakshmana standing as warriors on the bunds of the tank as it threatened to breach in the monsoon.
