History & significance

A pair of twin temples at Gandharadi on the Mahanadi in Boudh district, built by the Somavamshi kings in the late tenth century, one holding a shivalinga and the other a four-armed chlorite Vishnu; the pairing is read as a statement of Shaiva-Vaishnava accord and marks a formative stage of Kalinga architecture.
