The chief shrine of the Nava Nandi group of nine Nandi temples near Nandyal, its original structure built by the Badami Chalukyas in the 7th century with further work in the 10th and 15th centuries. Tenth-century inscriptions record repairs made under the local Nanda rulers.
Local tradition traces the name to the Nanda rulers of the region, who worshipped Nandi as their ancestral deity.
