The temple at Bolar from which the city of Mangalore takes its name, built in the 9th century under the Alupa king Kundavarman with the encouragement of the Nath teacher Matsyendranath. It has a two-storeyed gateway tower in the Kerala manner and keeps a standing link with the Kadri Yogirajmutt, whose ascetics attend its festivals.
A Malabar princess named Parimala is said to have renounced her kingdom for Matsyendranath, who initiated her into the Nath order and renamed her Mangaladevi.
