The temple that owns a kingdom: in 1750 Marthanda Varma dedicated Travancore itself to Padmanabha, ruling thereafter as the deity's servant (Padmanabha Dasa). The 5.5 m reclining Vishnu is viewed through three doors; the 2011 opening of its vaults revealed treasure valued in the tens of billions of dollars, making it the wealthiest known temple on earth.
The sage Divakara Muni, granted a vision of the child Krishna, chased the mischievous boy who merged into a huge ilappa tree; it fell and became Vishnu reclining across five kilometres — the sage begged the form shrink to thrice a staff's length, the image enshrined today over the still-sealed Vault B of serpent-guarded legend.
