Founded as Vinh An Temple between 1682 and 1685 by Thich Nguyen Thieu, a Chinese emigre monk who became the 33rd patriarch of the Lam Te Zen school, and renamed by the Nguyen lord Nguyen Phuc Tran in 1689. Repeatedly rebuilt under the Nguyen emperors through the 19th century, it is the source of the lineage most Buddhists in central and southern Vietnam trace their ordination to.
