A red-sandstone Vaishnava temple about 20 m high, rebuilt in 1580 under the direction of Sanatana Goswami with funds from the Multan trader Kapur Ram Das. The original image was taken to Jaipur in 1670 ahead of Aurangzeb's campaign and later to Karauli under King Gopal Singh; a replica was installed in 1748 and the hilltop temple rebuilt in 1819 by Nanda Kumar Basu.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
The deity is said to have been found at the foot of an old banyan tree by Advaita Acharya and to have been worshipped by the saint Mirabai.
