The upstream shrine of the three Ranganatha temples on the Kaveri, recorded by inscription as founded in 894 CE by the chief Tirumalaiah under Western Ganga rule. It was enlarged by the Hoysalas under Vishnuvardhana, renovated in 1210 under Veera Ballala II, and extended again in the Vijayanagara and Wodeyar periods.
