Founded in 1831 by Lama Tsultim Nima, who first kept a hermitage at the site before building the monastery. Home to about forty monks, it is known across Ladakh for the strictness with which it keeps the Vinaya rules.
Padmasambhava is held to have meditated in the caves around Rizong long before any monastery stood there, and later lamas are said to have shut themselves in those caves for years, taking food through a small window.
