History & significance

One of the 108 Divya Desams glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, standing near the Sethu coast in Ramanathapuram district. Believed to date to the late 8th century, it was enlarged over the centuries by Chola, Pandya, Nayak and Sethupathi rulers.

Sthala katha — the legend

Rama is said to have lain on darbha grass here, performing penance to compel the ocean to yield him a path to Lanka.
