A Shiva temple at Kuzhaiyur counted among the Vaippu Sthalams sung by the Nayanar Appar. It has no gopuram, only a walled entrance and a single prakaram, and holds further shrines to Subramanya, Kasi Visvanatha and Varadharaja Perumal; its last kumbhabhishekham was in July 2009.
When Shiva's wedding on Kailash tilted the earth's balance, he sent the sage Agastya south to restore it, and the sage is said to have worshipped here on that journey, giving the place its name.
