Established by Guru Hargobind in 1606, with Baba Buddha and Bhai Gurdas, as the seat from which temporal matters and justice would be settled. It is the highest seat of earthly authority for the Khalsa and the office of the jathedar; demolished in 1986, it was rebuilt in 1995.
When Guru Hargobind unveiled the platform on 15 June 1606 he put on two swords, one for spiritual and one for temporal authority, piri and miri.
