History & significance

The Divya Desam of Thiruvithuvakkodu on the Bharathappuzha, also counted among the 108 Shivalayams, where riverside last rites are performed as at Varanasi; the temple preserves a record of the Chola emperor Rajendra I.

Sthala katha — the legend

The elephant-king Gajendra and Lakshmi are both said to have worshipped Vishnu here with lotuses from the temple's lotus garden.
