Built in 1729 by the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I beside the Kashi Vishwanath precinct, this Nagara-style temple honours the goddess of nourishment. It holds two images of the goddess, one of brass shown daily and one of gold unveiled only on Annakut day.
It is told that when Shiva called all the world including food mere illusion, Parvati made food vanish until he conceded its necessity, whereupon she took the form of Annapurna and set up a kitchen in Varanasi to feed her devotees.
