A Vaippu Sthalam sung by the Nayanar Appar and therefore held to have existed by the seventh century; the name Elumur, 'place of seven', is explained by seven sages said to have worshipped Shiva here. After the temple fell into ruin the lingam and other images were found buried in the silt of a tank, reinstalled first under a thatched roof and later in a permanent shrine, which is why the deity is also called Jalakandeswarar.
