A hilltop Kali temple in the Pindar valley of Garhwal, founded by a Katyuri king and altered in 1670 and again in the colonial period, when Commissioner G. W. Traill built a shrine for a relocated Nanda Devi image.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Local tradition says Traill was struck with snow-blindness by the offended goddess and recovered only after building her a temple.
