One of the oldest temples in Pathanamthitta district, standing where the Achankovil river loops around the site on three sides. It is known for the Rudrapongala of the month of Kumbham and for a Padayani custom in which newborn children are presented to the goddess.
A devotee is said to have carried a flower from the Kodungallur Bhagavathy temple in which the goddess Bhuvaneswari dwelt, and was inspired to install her at Valamchuzhy.
