One of the seven Saptamangai or Chakkarapalli shrines linked to the Saptamatrikas. Unusually for Thanjavur district its sanctum is built of brick rather than granite, and its Chandikesvara image is dated to the 10th century.

Chandra, cursed by Daksha for favouring one daughter above the rest, is said to have come to Thazhamangai and been freed of the curse by worshipping here.
