History & significance A terraced brick stupa at Sarnath marking the place where the Buddha is said to have met his first disciples on the way from Bodh Gaya; an octagonal tower was later raised on it by Govardhan, son of Raja Todar Mal, to mark a visit by the Mughal emperor Humayun.
