One of the 108 Shiva temples of Kerala and one of five Shiva shrines ringing Guruvayur. Its sanctum carries a copper roof with a golden finial, and a Subrahmanya shrine was added in renovations in 2001.
Folklore holds that the sage Parashurama installed the Shiva image here.
