Western seat of the Char Dham, the 'Jagat Mandir' rising five storeys over the Gomti's meeting with the sea. Adi Shankara established the Sharada Peetha here; the temple flag — changed five times daily — is hoisted by hereditary right and sighted by pilgrims as darshan in itself. Offshore excavations have fed a century of fascination with Krishna's drowned golden city.
When Krishna left his body, the ocean reclaimed Dwarka in seven days, sparing only his own precinct; the present shrine is held to stand over his residence, raised — tradition says — by his great-grandson Vajranabha.
