A much-visited Ganesha shrine at Idagunji in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, near Honnavara, traced in the article to the 4th–5th century CE. The two-armed standing image is unusual and draws large numbers of pilgrims each year.
It is said that the sage Valakhilya, obstructed in a sacrifice on the Sharavathi bank, was advised by Narada to worship Ganesha, who agreed to remain at Kunjavana, the grove that became Idagunji.
