A much-visited shrine of the goddess Mahalakshmi in the Tumkur district village of Goravanahalli in Karnataka. Its worship was sustained through the twentieth century by the devotee Kamalamma, who came to the village in 1925 and settled there in 1952.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
The goddess is said to have blessed a poor man named Abbayya with wealth, and later to have appeared to Thotadappa in his dreams asking him to raise a shrine for her.
