A Vaishnava temple at Saligrama, 22 km from Udupi, whose two-armed lion-headed image of Narasimha is carved from saligrama stone and dated to the 8th century. The Kota Brahmins of fourteen surrounding villages take this deity, rather than any human acharya, as their sole guru.
The deity is said to have appeared of its own accord at the foot of a pipal tree, holding conch and discus.
