History & significance

One of Ayodhya's principal shrines, reached by seventy-six steps and laid out like a four-sided fort with round bastions at its corners and a silver-worked sanctum. It is administered by the Bairagi mahants of the Ramanandi sampradaya and the Nirvani Akhara.

Sthala katha — the legend

Hanuman is said to have taken up residence in a cave on this spot to keep watch over Ramkot after Rama returned to Ayodhya from his victory over Ravana.
