History & significance

An unusual Kerala goddess shrine with no installed image: the deity is worshipped in a pit, in her form as a huntress. It is known for the offering of muttarukkal, made by devotees seeking the removal of obstacles.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

During the Pandavas' exile Arjuna performed severe penance here to obtain the Pashupatastra, and Shiva, disguised as a hunter alongside Parvati, tested his pride before granting it.
